I’ve been slacking on the updates. Twitter is lower maintenance so I’ve been on that, but it’s not the same so my guilt trip is going strong. What shall I update about?

I went to my first baby shower as an adult. It was scary, actually. I didn’t feel socially comfortable until it was nearly done, to be honest. I’m not one terribly prone to social anxiety so I don’t exactly know what that was about. It was maybe just jarring because it was just so not what I had expected. The mother-to-be and her husband didn’t care or know very much about their baby registry. They put about 13 things on it total, so I inferred wrongly that at most 10 people would be showing to the baby shower. And, well, about 20 people showed, most of which were strangers to me. Also, it was at a Greek restaurant. Not only am I not a fan of Greek food but the food was objectively poor to boot; everything dry and terribly salty.

The first pair of my friends announced their engagement and have already invited us to their October wedding. I say “first” because although I’ve been to a few weddings before in my life, they were for family members or people I’d term “friends of the family.” These are actually people I see socially without my mother, so this seems like another one of those Adult Milestones. And apart from how the wedding relates to me and all that (ahem), I’m actually very happy for them. I was around for their friends stage and early relationship. They’re a great couple and I wish them the best of luck.

Baby Hannah was a lie; baby Jack was born on June 17, and I’ve already babysat about 4 times. The baby shower I went to? It was 2 weeks before the baby was actually due. And four months ago, the sonogram technician apparently misread the baby’s prenatal genitalia, much to the surprise of everyone at the hospital on the day of delivery. And just like that, Hannah Min morphed into John Anthony III just like that. He was born just .2 ounces short of 7 pounds and he’s quite large now, or so it seems. He spends much of his time in formula-food-coma, but he is quite loved. I look forward to him developing more of a personality, as well as neck stability.

I updated my resume and applied for a student advisor position with the law school. The school puts incoming students in sections of roughly 18-20 students who go through all of their first year together. That’s the standard part. My school also assigns an advising “team” consisting of a career counselor, a faculty member, and an upperclass student. I applied for the upperclass student bit.

I secured an internship this fall with the Kings County District Attorney’s office. If there are no hiccups, I’ll be assigned to the homicide bureau, which I’m inordinately excited about. I really can’t wait. I also put together most of my schedule for the fall, subject to change if I get off the waitlist for Criminal Procedure I.

The basil bit it and I don’t know why, but I am germinating more seeds and am hopeful for those. Apple, lemon, and grapefruit seeds are occupying wet napkins in my fridge, bathroom counter, and window sill. Some have sprouted little roots but I am giving them a little while longer before transplanting them to soil.

And that was more or less June. And now we’re already on July 4th (happy birthday, nation, btw). I have no real plans; Marc has hopped public transit to Jersey City to play Magic: The Gathering at a friend’s house, and I am fending for myself for most of the day. Which is partially why I’m here updating le blog. So those are the updates, folks.

Summer plans updated

May 30th, 2009

To look back on my ambitious summer plans…

  • Keep my current windowsill garden alive My basil plants and my citrus seedlings died! I think I overwatered them and smothered them to death. What is left of my windowsill garden is the two money trees (Pachira aquatica) and a jade plant. Even the cutting I made of the jade plant hasn’t dried out properly and developed air roots for planting elsewhere.
  • Cook one new dish a month Already looking to fail May, but technically, May’s not even summer…
  • Make at least one terrarium Never did get the moss or activated charcoal, but I do have plenty of vessels. Hopefully soon?
  • Knit at least three things in my Ravelry queue Made one baby blanket so far and a bib that I don’t like (it’s too thick and I can’t settle on a tying mechanism that I like)
  • Read at least one book a month Finished Persepolis and haven’t decided what to move on to. Some David Foster Wallace nonfiction perhaps, or Heart of Darkness, maybe…
  • Reorganize my room Mmm, yeah, no…
  • Apply for at least 10 fall internships Maybe looked at 10…
  • Lose 15 pounds I’m closer to gaining weight than losing it, in all likelihood.

I’m still working on it. On everything. But it hasn’t turned into a big, insurmountable, depressing task just yet. I’m still in a good mood. Still looking forward to doing more this summer. I really can’t wait.

Work-inspired (if that’s the word) things I’m considering adding to crochet/knit projects this summer:

  • shawls or wraps for the two secretaries at work, because the office temperature is so unpredictable (and generally prone to being freezing even when it’s hot outside).
  • something corny but practical for the professor I’m working under, maybe organizational in nature, or maybe just personalized, commemorative.
  • maybe a basket or something functional for the office.

My first completd crochet project is a baby afghan.  I made it for an upcoming baby shower — my first as an adult actually. I used 5 Cream ‘n Sugar in 199 Pretty Pastels.  It’s actually more pastel and not quite as garish as the pictures make it out to be, but I couldn’t quite find an appropriate color adjustment in importing it without making it look washed out.

It’s a fairly easy solid shell stitch, which I got from a Youtube user Mikeyssmail in a 5-part tutorial.  I actually had one more Sugar ‘n Cream pack that I didn’t find in the bag until I was done with the border.  Oh well, it turned out roughly square — 26″ by 28″, which isn’t so bad.  I did a simple double crochet border in Caron One Pound, rose color.  I must have ripped it out a good 20 times before I finally figured out what I was doing.  And I could be much happier with it, no doubt, but for my first project, I think it’s as good as can be expected. Here is a shot that’s pulled out a bit.

I have:

  • celebrated by getting pleasantly inebriated with my best friends from my section
  • crocheted about a third of a baby blanket for an upcoming baby shower (see picture)
  • caught up on Fringe (for good or for worse)
  • written my state senator to ask him to vote yes on the New York state gay marriage bill
  • ordered my textbooks for torts at a third of retail price
  • overwatered my basil plants to death! (that happened during finals, actually)
  • made plans with Marc to attend a reading/performance by John Hodgman and Eugene Mirman

Next up on my summer to do list? In no particular order:

  • more crochet projects: bibs, more blankets
  • retry knitting (this time, with success)
  • terrariums! Or terraria, more accurately.
  • sewing projects: pillow cases, summer halter
  • make a dent in my never-ending reading list (more on that another time)
  • Star Trek!
  • Mad Men comes back!
  • maybe play some D&D?
  • SUMMER JOB
  • get back to regular grocery shopping and cooking

I am so inordinately excited.  I really want to just hurry up and geek the hell out.

I had to post this.
