I’ve been slacking on the updates. Twitter is lower maintenance so I’ve been on that, but it’s not the same so my guilt trip is going strong. What shall I update about?
I went to my first baby shower as an adult. It was scary, actually. I didn’t feel socially comfortable until it was nearly done, to be honest. I’m not one terribly prone to social anxiety so I don’t exactly know what that was about. It was maybe just jarring because it was just so not what I had expected. The mother-to-be and her husband didn’t care or know very much about their baby registry. They put about 13 things on it total, so I inferred wrongly that at most 10 people would be showing to the baby shower. And, well, about 20 people showed, most of which were strangers to me. Also, it was at a Greek restaurant. Not only am I not a fan of Greek food but the food was objectively poor to boot; everything dry and terribly salty.
The first pair of my friends announced their engagement and have already invited us to their October wedding. I say “first” because although I’ve been to a few weddings before in my life, they were for family members or people I’d term “friends of the family.” These are actually people I see socially without my mother, so this seems like another one of those Adult Milestones. And apart from how the wedding relates to me and all that (ahem), I’m actually very happy for them. I was around for their friends stage and early relationship. They’re a great couple and I wish them the best of luck.
Baby Hannah was a lie; baby Jack was born on June 17, and I’ve already babysat about 4 times. The baby shower I went to? It was 2 weeks before the baby was actually due. And four months ago, the sonogram technician apparently misread the baby’s prenatal genitalia, much to the surprise of everyone at the hospital on the day of delivery. And just like that, Hannah Min morphed into John Anthony III just like that. He was born just .2 ounces short of 7 pounds and he’s quite large now, or so it seems. He spends much of his time in formula-food-coma, but he is quite loved. I look forward to him developing more of a personality, as well as neck stability.
I updated my resume and applied for a student advisor position with the law school. The school puts incoming students in sections of roughly 18-20 students who go through all of their first year together. That’s the standard part. My school also assigns an advising “team” consisting of a career counselor, a faculty member, and an upperclass student. I applied for the upperclass student bit.
I secured an internship this fall with the Kings County District Attorney’s office. If there are no hiccups, I’ll be assigned to the homicide bureau, which I’m inordinately excited about. I really can’t wait. I also put together most of my schedule for the fall, subject to change if I get off the waitlist for Criminal Procedure I.
The basil bit it and I don’t know why, but I am germinating more seeds and am hopeful for those. Apple, lemon, and grapefruit seeds are occupying wet napkins in my fridge, bathroom counter, and window sill. Some have sprouted little roots but I am giving them a little while longer before transplanting them to soil.
And that was more or less June. And now we’re already on July 4th (happy birthday, nation, btw). I have no real plans; Marc has hopped public transit to Jersey City to play Magic: The Gathering at a friend’s house, and I am fending for myself for most of the day. Which is partially why I’m here updating le blog. So those are the updates, folks.
